This August, Ji Hong Wushu & Tai Chi College travelled to Markham, Ontario, for the 2025 International Martial Arts Festival & National Championships, the annual Canadian qualifier for global wushu events. Led by Master Hongyuan Luo and Master Jennifer Gu, the Ji Hong team composed of 31 athletes, tied for the largest delegation at the competition, which gathered a total of 217 athletes. Across a variety of disciplines, Ji Hong athletes vied for the opportunity to represent the country at four upcoming events: the 17th World Wushu Championships, the 10th World Junior Wushu Championships (qualifier for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games), the 5th Pan American KungFu Championships, and the 10th World KungFu Championships.
On Field of Play #1, four Ji Hong athletes competed to qualify for the 17th World Wushu Championships (WWC) to be held in Brasilia, Brazil, this September. The International Wushu Federation deems the WWC as the official pinnacle championships in the sport, where each country sends a team of their highest-ranking four male and four female taolu athletes. In this selection event, Ji Hong received a total of 4 gold medals and 4 silver medals. Congratulations to Ji Hong athletes Brandon Luo (1st-ranked male) and Julianna Huang (2nd-ranked female) for qualifying for the 17th World Wushu Championships, and Yan Khoo (5th-ranked female) for qualifying for the alternate team.
Competing on the same field were junior athletes hoping to qualify for the 10th World Junior Wushu Championships (WJWC) to be held in Tianjin, China, in March 2026. This event has special significance because it also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games to be held in Dakar, Senegal, marking an important milestone in wushu’s path to the Olympics. The WJWC features three age groups (A, B, C) that perform compulsory forms. Team Canada’s Group A is composed of three male and three female taolu athletes, while Groups B and C each have two male and two female taolu athletes. For the junior selections, Ji Hong received a total of 15 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals. Congratulations to Ji Hong athletes Max Dong (2nd-ranked male in Group A) and Matea Cheng (2nd-ranked female in Group B) for qualifying for the 10th WJWC.
At the other end of the gymnasium on Field of Play #2, 7 Ji Hong athletes competed for a spot at the 5th Pan American KungFu Championships (PAKFC) and the 10th World KungFu Championships (WKFC). These sport-for-all competitions gather practitioners of all ages and varying skill levels within all traditional Kungfu styles. Across these disciplines, Ji Hong athletes achieved 17 gold medals, 3 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal. Congratulations to Jaylin Yim, Raymond Ma, Siaw Kin Lee, Pang Ng, and Wendy Fung, Lee Sollereder & Katelyn Choy, who qualified for the 5th PAKFC and the 10th WKFC.
As we wrap up a successful competition run with a total of 70 medals, congratulations to all of the Ji Hong athletes who competed and good luck to the athletes representing Canada!
